The Odd Blog Week In Review (Week ?)
I don’t know what week it is. It’s summer, why should I be keeping track of dates? There is one date that I’m counting to, next Friday my second cousins visit, with five kids aged 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9. Suggestions, please!?
Now to baseball, where the Royals are playing the Pirates, and I am ashamed to say that we have a worse record than Pittsburgh. Yipe! That means, with respect to the Pirates, that the Royals are worse than I thought they were. Let’s see how we do in this series.
There is one Royal who is doing good as of recently, and that’s Luke Hochevar. According to MLB.com’s player search, there are four of him (seriously, try it!) and as long as the one that has shown up in the last few starts keeps the other three away, I’m fine with that. Imagine all four showing up to start a game or something. That would be odd. Anyway… he’s had some great starts recently, pitching an 80 pitch complete game against the Reds last week and getting a pretty good start in this week against Houston, despite having a no-decision thanks to our imploding bullpen. So, the start in the series finale against Pittsburgh, assuming I have the schedule right, is the one where he can either prove himself ready for the majors and possibly be a Zack Greinke in the future, or falls down like he did early in the season and have to be sent to the minors… again.
Next, (M/B)anny Ramirez. What was he doing playing minor-league ball? You would think that they wouldn’t allow to play any baseball, but apparently there’s a loophole or something. So I’m offering (of course) my take on what the rules should be:
“When a player is suspended for any amount of time by the league, that player will not be allowed to play baseball with the MLB or any of its affiliates, but should be allowed to participate in practices with the team, so long as he is not in the dugout, clubhouse etc. during a game. They will not be allowed on road trips, unless they are suspended for more than 15 games and will be reinstated during a said road trip, etc. etc. etc.”
I had more, but I have a feeling that was getting a little boring.
Finally, a topic that, as a Buffalo Sabres fan, I unfortunately know way too much about. Injuries! Coco Crisp is gone for the season after getting shoulder surgery, and that is a big blow to our chances. Coupled with other injuries that have plagued our team, including those to Alex Gordon at the beginning of the season and Kyle Farnsworth now, that’s not good. AND… breaking news from three hours ago (that’s what they call late-breaking) Sidney Ponson tests positive!?! Yipe! But what for? Read the article, but apparently it’s for a banned stimulant. He’s banned from international play for two years, but of course the WBC and the Olympics (which no longer have baseball) aren’t for three years. Nice going, IBAF.
The World Baseball Classic… a classic?
Quite the game last night between Japan and Korea. Why would anyone pitch to Ichiro with two outs and the opportunity to get a force out at any base? I don’t know, but the last game of the Classic was one for the ages.
Now it’s time for the AL West preview… and since I’ve been gone for a week, I’m throwing in the NL West too. Two for the price of one!
AL West
- LA Angels
- Texas Rangers
- Oakland A’s
- Seattle Mariners
NL West
- LA Dodgers
- Colorado Rockies
- San Diego Padres
- San Francisco Giants
- Arizona Diamondbacks
And now it’s time for a little oddness…
According to MSNBC.com and the Associated Press, the manager of a pizza outlet discovered some legs hanging out of a vent above his pizza oven Monday morning, along with a voice yelling “Help Me!” The man said he’d been in the duct for five to six hours. He was arrested on suspicion of burglary. The full story is here…
My NCAA brackets are in the top 12%. I just picked them from the team’s names. Take that, so called “experts!”
NL Central coming up…
Madness!
I apologize for my last two posts. I was short on time and wanted to get them done.
Anyway, today looks like a good day. The high temperature is supposed to be 68 degrees- it really feels like spring out here.
The Royals must have felt good yesterday, they knocked in 11 runs on 17 hits against the Giants. A few years ago the Royals had a promotion going that if they got 12 hits in a game, a donut company in the area would give everyone there a dozen donuts free. That was back when we consistently got 100-loss seasons, so they didn’t really lose that much profit. Then the Royals started improving, and the donut promotion was replaced by bagels. Now, there’s nothing, so you could say the fans at yesterday’s game got ripped off.
The US beat the Netherlands (or Nederlands, whatever floats your boat) 9-3 yesterday. I was hoping that the Dutch would play some team like Venezuela so I could root for them. But I have to go with my home country, so I’m USA all the way. You could call me a patriot. Incidentally, I despise the New England Patriots, but that’s different.
Finally, March Madness. Well, the World Baseball Classic is providing enough of that, but I guess we can’t forget the college basketball version. (Actually, the NHL is providing a lot of madness at this point, but I doubt many readers of this blog like hockey.) Anyway, I was trying to fill out my bracket the second all the matchups were announced. Or maybe a little before then. I don’t really care about who wins, so I fill it out according to the names of the mascots. For example, if Utah is playing Arizona, I’ll take Arizona, because nobody knows what a “Ute” is. (No offense, Utah fans) The problem begins when you have two team with the same name, such as Missouri and Memphis.
That’s all for now. There’s more madness to come, including my AL Central preview
Dutch upset Dominicans… twice!
Plus, an AL East Preview!
So, let’s get started.
When the Netherlands first beat the Dominican Republic, I thought it was a pretty good upset. Beating a powerhouse team like the DR twice when you’re the Netherlands- that’s amazing!
I hope Jose Guillen wasn’t being peppy about the DR like he is with the Royals. That could spell bad news.
My computer is annoying, and now needs to reboot. So, in 5 minutes, I will have an AL East preview!
A tie?
I don’t know what happened but I looked at the final score of the Royals game today and it was a tie.
A tie? Do those exist? I suppose I’m used to the regular season. This is probably the first time in my life that I’ve even paid attention to spring training games. While they don’t mean anything, I’d like to see the games played to completion.
Last post I was questioning the intelligence of a few teams. Now I’m beginning to question my own. While looking at future spring training games, I noticed that at one point Kansas City was going to play two games at once.
Two games at once?
Apparently, I’m not observant enough to take note of the “split-squad” symbol. I am observant enough to realize I almost typed that as “spit-squad.”
Next, I read on msnbc.com that L.A. county is having a cuss-free week. Ha! Good luck with that.
Finally, the World Baseball Classic. My favorites are Japan, the US, and the Dominican Republic. I’m still thinking about who will win. The D.R. team should hope that Jose Guillen doesn’t get any more ingrown toenails.
