It may be early, but…
A lot of people don’t realize it, but KC has some of the best pitching around. Some teams have a one-two punch. We’ve got a one-two-three punch. Gil Meche, Zack Greinke, and Kyle Davies have been excellent so far this year, and our bullpen hasn’t blown any saves yet. We may not rival some other big-market teams, but we can certainly beat a few. Let’s have a rematch, New York. Our best three pitchers versus your best. I seem to recall Meche beat you in the final game…
That’s all for now. Next time I campaign for the Royals, I’m spelling the names right.
2…2…2…1?
Very disappointed with the Royals last night. They should have scored another run and been consistent. Oh, well, you can’t win ‘em all.
The Odd Blog Week in Review
An exciting week for Kansas City as we were in first place! It may have only been for one day, but first place is first place. And if you’re in first place after scoring six runs in your first three games, that either means that the division is terrible, or your pitching is superb…I’m hoping it’s both.
White Sox 4, Royals 2
It wasn’t a good opening day for KC as the guy we are paying nine million dollars to gave up the game winning home run. See the problem with the Yankees?
Royals 2, White Sox 0
Another strong pitching performance here, and the Royals won this time. I hope Zack Grienke pitches like this all year: 0 runs on 3 hits for Sox, and the series is tied up
Royals 2, White Sox 1
This time a new acquisition won it for us, as Coco Crisp went deep for the game winner. I got a little nervous at the end, but Joakim Soria is one of the top 3 closers in the game, and he was able to shut the Sox down for the game and series win.
Yankees 4, Royals 1
We didn’t achieve the magic number in this game, but we won a moral victory with our new stadium. Maybe. Sorry about moving the Yankees from the bottom, Julia. By the way, what is Toronto doing on top in the East?
Major League Baseball was hit by a tragedy on Thursday when it was discovered that LA Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart. I’m not that good at writing about deaths, but my thoughts and prayers are certainly with his family and the Angels as they go through this difficult time. I hope this opens more eyes about the dangers of drinking and driving, not just to the driver but to other people on the road.
NL Central Preview
The biggest division gets center stage, but first, a haiku I wrote about today’s weather:
Raindrops fall and freeze
On roads, trees, and my back porch
I’m staying inside.
There is freezing rain pounding the area, so what better to do than blog?
NL Central Preview
- Chicago Cubs
- Houston Astros
- Milwaukee Brewers
- St. Louis Cardinals
- Cincinnati Reds
- Pittsburgh Pirates
In my opinion, the Astros and Brewers could be switched…
I got my fantasy draft done just under the wire (on Yahoo!) and got a lot of first basemen. Suggestions, anyone?

Bargain Basement
Here’s something shocking. I may be in a league of four players, but you’d think that somebody would draft these players before I did: (The draft was done automatically, so no one was there)
Pujols was the last pick in round 5
Rodriguez was the last pick in round 7
Ramirez was the last pick in round 11. 11! He was the top ranked overall in Yahoo!
Hamels was the last pick in round 13
Howard was the last pick in round 17
If the rest of the season is like the draft, it should be very easy to win.
Now that I’ve bored you with my fantasy team, I’m leaving. The next preview will be the NL East, and then… the complete preview, likely just before opening day.
I will now go watch the freezing rain come down.
Maybe this year the Royals are using real bats…
…Because it seems like they’ve been using toothpicks the last few seasons. Here are some stats:
- The last Royal to hit 30 home runs in one season was Jermaine Dye, in 2000.
- The Royals hit just 120 HR last year, 27th in the league and 2nd last in the AL to the Twins. In 2007, the Royals were in last place in this category.
- KC scored 691 runs last year, 25th in the league.
- The Royals were dead last in total walks last year, so it appears no one is afraid to pitch to us. (Actually, the Tigers, A’s and Nationals had less intentional walks, but it makes my case sound better if I don’t mention those.)
All this must mean that the pitching must be the thing that kept us from losing 100 games last year. The stats don’t show it, but those are just on paper; I’m going to be bold and say that the Royals will be one of top 10 pitching teams in 2009. What?! Yes, and if not this year, within 2 years, 3 at the most. You’ve got Gil Meche, the veteran; Zack Grienke, already a top pitcher at 25, Brian Bannister, who, despite having bad luck last season, has a good work ethic; Kyle Davies, who was hot at the end of last season; and Joakim Soria, the All-Star, who was a good pickup last year for my fantasy baseball team, with 42 saves in 45 opportunities and an era of 1.60.
I want to get in an argument with somebody over this, so please leave a comment. You know where I stand, I want to know your thoughts on the Royals’ rotation.
By the way, sorry I haven’t been living up to this blog’s name. I’ll try to be more odd in the coming weeks.
